The purpose of this exercise is to introduce straight line art using the simplest of tools and it does not require maths or measuring skills. It will give the child the satisfaction of creating neat and colourful art that is all the child’s own work.
Dinner plate or other suitable circular object.
Lay the plate on the paper and centre it by eye. It will be easier to centre if the paper is not much larger than the plate.
Use a coloured pencil to draw a line around the plate. Remove the plate.
Fold the sheet of paper in half and then unfold it.
Fold the sheet of paper in half in the other direction and then unfold it.
Fold the sheet from corner to corner and unfold it.
Fold the sheet to the other corner and unfold it.
Use coloured pencils and a straight edge to join the points where the fold lines cross the circle. Here are some examples of the patterns that can be produced.
